Portfolio Surgery at The Prosthetics Event is an incredible opportunity for students and early career artists trying to break into the prosthetics industry to have a one-to-one consultation with a senior industry artist, who provides applicants with expert advice about their portfolio and job-seeking. There are Oscar, BAFTA and Guild Award-winners, artists with vast amounts of industry experience gained through 30+ year careers.
Here are details of just three of the artists who will be amongst the extraordinary advisors in Portfolio Surgery this weekend; they’re an amazing bunch, representative of the level of professional advisors at The Prosthetics Event!
David won numerous major industry gongs last year including an Academy Award, BAFTA and Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Award for his work transforming Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill in ‘Darkest Hour’, along with fellow artists Kazuhiro Tsuji and Lucy Sibbick.
He has been working in the industry since leaving college in 1996, spending over 10 years working for Madame Tussaud’s in London before starting his career in film and TV.
David specialises in ultra-realistic body duplication and likeness makeups and has worked on many recent films including ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw’, ‘Black Mirror: Bandersnatch’, ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’, ‘Overlord’, ‘Ready Player One’ and ‘Breathe’, for which he applied Andrew Garfield’s prosthetic makeup. Very recently he was prosthetics designer on two projects that are currently in post-production: movie ‘The Old Guard’ starring Charlize Theron, and TV series ‘Adult Material’.
His other credits include a host of other major titles such as ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’, ‘The Revenant’, ‘Spectre’, ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’, ‘World War Z’, ‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’, ‘The Iron Lady’ and ‘X-Men: First Class’ to name only some!
Since beginning as a trainee on ‘Hellraiser’, Stuart has been working steadily for effects companies, make-up designers and production companies on a wide range of projects for over 30 years. He was prosthetics effects designer on cult comedy horror movie ‘Shaun of the Dead’, and some of this other credits include Peter Jackson’s ‘Braindead’, ‘The Descent’, ‘Attack the Block’, ‘The Peter Serafinowicz Show’, ‘Look around You’, ‘From Hell’, ‘Saving Private Ryan’, ‘The Tenth Kingdom’, ‘High Rise’ and ‘Spitting Image’.
Stuart was recruited in 2012 by private makeup college CMU and employed as a full-time instructor for almost three years in Toronto, Canada, before returning to the UK. He now divides his time between training and education and working on independent film projects or providing prosthetics for a variety of make-up designers.
As well as being a regular instructor for Gorton Studio, he has also worked for UCB, Solent University, University of Bedfordshire and helped run various bespoke courses for Gorton Studio. He is currently working for London College of Fashion and the University of Bolton.
Recent industry work includes providing prosthetics for a series of indie thrillers called ‘Dark Ditties’, ‘Krypton’ Season 1, ‘Temple’, and most recently ‘Hanna’ Season 2.
Cliff has worked with many of Hollywood’s best directors, contributing some very significant work to the big and small screens including over 80 movies as a special effects make-up artist, starting out in 1986 on Clive Barker’s ‘Hellraiser’, with subsequent highlights including Steven Spielberg’s ‘Warhorse’, ‘Clash of the Titans’, ‘King Arthur’ and ‘World War Z’. He was a lead creature designer for Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Hellboy II: The Golden Army’ and a prosthetics designer for Ridley Scott’s ‘Black Hawk Down’ and ‘Kingdom of Heaven’. More recent work includes Brad Pitt war drama ‘Fury’, Afghan war minefield drama ‘Kajaki The True Story’, ‘The Forest’ and ‘Ghost Stories’.
A long-time collaborator with director Danny Boyle, Cliff helped redefine the zombie movie with ‘28 Days Later’ and also created the mind-bending effects for Boyle’s movie ‘Trance’, as well as supplying effects for the director’s national theatre production of ‘Frankenstein’.
Projects awaiting release in 2020 include the horror films ‘The Amulet’ and ‘The Power’, and the Chinese actioner ‘The Rescue’.
He has worked on many TV series including ‘Doctor Who’ and dystopian drama ‘Curfew’, as well as numerous award-winning commercials, and his promo work includes landmark videos for Aphex Twin, Massive Attack, Robbie Williams and Manic Street Preachers amongst others.
Cliff has exhibited sculptures at numerous galleries throughout the UK, Europe and the United States, and curated an exhibition of work by the world’s leading make-up effects artists for the Cologne Art Fair. He is the author of numerous magazine articles for Amazing Figure Modeller and Makeup Artist Magazine, and has published two collections of horror fiction. His short story ‘The Birch’ was turned into a Webby Award-winning short, which he produced and made the titular creature for, and he has recently co-produced a fifteen-part series for Facebook Watch based on the short.
